The oldest historical records place its existence 5,000 years ago, in the Mesolithic period, but its first use was in the 5th century AD when King Kasyapa built “The Lion Fortress” there to defend his throne from his brother Mogallana. However, Mogallana managed to besiege it, and before being captured, King Kasyapa committed suicide, and Mogallana entrusted Sigiriya to Buddhist monks. Today, it is perhaps the most memorable place for visitors to Sri Lanka (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). We’ll then continue our journey to our final destination. Arrival, dinner and accommodation.
